Current mood: confused

Attention Fellow LJ Nerds!
Particularly you, [info]butterflybill and [info]sayyana. I'm having yet another latin word construction quandary. I'm wondering, first of all, how to construct a word for "the little swift men," from maybe either "celer" or "rapidus." I've been wrestling with diminutive plural suffixes all morning, and it's driving me crazy. I have a hypothetical "celerilli," but I'm sure that's wrong somehow. The second part of my problem is, when I finally have this crazy ass word made, how the hell do I decline it?

politely is "No, thank you."
demonstratively is *shaking head*
rudely is "No and fuck no."

I can't believe I have a friend with a latin word construction quandary. =)

Actually, florilegia & I had a latin word construction quandary about 2 weeks ago, and we called my Nova Roma friends in Maine.

I know -ito and -ino and -ette and -chen and -ushka but I don't know much about diminuitives in Latin. I don't think the Romans used them as much as the Italians and Mexicans.

celerilli would probably be celerillorum, celerillis, celerillos, celerillis like any other 2nd declension plural.

I thought "celer" was 3rd declension...

But you've put the ending on it, and the ending's ending is -i. (not -es)

I like that even better, because if it's 2nd declension it's a freak of a lot easier to work with. Thanks! :)

I will have to look that up in my Latin book tonight actually. I will print out your post and see what I can find. It will be fun!
I suppose if you were allowed to make up Latin words (isn't that against the law? haha) then you will have to decide if it is a first declension, 2nd declension or neuter, (though from the sound of it, it might be best suited for a 1st declension) and just follow the basic declination processes for whichever it seems to work best with. Does that make sense?
1st declension as you know:
a ae
ae arum
ae is
am as
a is
*Now the first declension's through...*

Ahh, don't you love it when teachers make you sing songs to remember stuff like that? My vote is FIRST DECLENSION, FIRST DECLENSION! Oh pick me! Pick me!

Ok so the format of the endings didn't turn out the best....
a
ae
ae
am
a
ae
arum
is
as
is
there you go.

No shit, did you have to learn the "o, s, t, mus, tis, nt" Mickey Mouse club thing for verb endings?
